When you’ve helped thousands of companies protect their data and had thousands more conversations, you learn a thing or two about what drives people to buy. One thing that’s become clear is that while every company has its own unique motivations and needs for protecting their data, they usually fall into three distinct categories.

With World Backup Day around the corner, we’re sharing the top reasons companies choose to protect their SaaS data, as told to us by our customers.

Protection Against Data Loss and Corruption

The most common reason companies choose to back up their data is also the most obvious- they have valuable data that they can’t afford to lose.

Data loss and corruption can occur for numerous reasons, the majority of which aren’t malicious. Verizon's well-known Data Breach Incident Report found that 75% of data breaches involve human error. Without adequate backup measures, organizations risk losing valuable information, including customer records, financial data, and intellectual property. By regularly backing up SaaS data, businesses can ensure they have access to clean, uncorrupted copies in the event of data loss or corruption.

“For me the biggest benefit is the confidence knowing that even if there’s a corruption or accidental deletion, we can quickly restore any lost data.”- Bupa Dental

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery

For many organizations, it’s not the one-off corrupted record or accidental deletion that keeps them up. It’s the large-scale event that grinds operations to a halt. Think of cyberattacks like ransomware, platform outages, natural disasters, or even a global pandemic.

Even though SaaS applications are very reliable, outages do happen. Several years ago, a service disruption forced Salesforce to block access to thousands of its customers for just over 15 hours. To put that into perspective, a single hour of server downtime can cost enterprises between $300,000 and $400,000. By having backups outside of your primary SaaS application, your data will still be accessible in the event of an outage, allowing you to maintain continuity.

“There are major security breaches in the news on a weekly basis, and they keep getting worse. Knowing our core data is backed up, off system, to a third party reduces the risk of a total loss that would impact our business significantly.” -YearUp.

Compliance and Regulatory Requirements

Some companies don’t have the luxury of choosing whether or not to back up their data. They’re required to do so for compliance reasons.

Compliance is always at the top of businesses' minds in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and government. And recently, several new regulations specifically require backups. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in hefty fines, legal repercussions, and damage to reputation. According to Saviynt's The True Cost of Non-Compliance Report, the typical cost of a non-compliance event is $5.9M. Backing up SaaS data ensures organizations have a failsafe to meet regulatory requirements and safeguard sensitive information.

“As a financial services company, the data we’re keeping is sensitive. If something were to happen to a customer’s private information or legal documentation — well, that would be tragic.”-  Glenmede
